Ekspedisjonshallen - Sommerro

Ekspedisjonshallen is Sommerro’s all-day brasserie, set in the former headquarters of Oslo’s electricity company. The large hall serves breakfast, weekday lunch, weekend brunch and dinner, with a bar and a programme of live music. Menus include classic brasserie dishes and vegetarian options, and the terrace adds outdoor tables when in use. It suits anything from a daytime meal to a longer evening, but each service has its own hours. After 22:00, the venue has a minimum age of 25.

District 4

District 4 serves Vietnamese food inspired by Saigon’s street kitchens from its corner in Sagene. The menu includes phở, bánh mì, rice and noodle dishes, with tofu and vegetarian choices alongside meat and seafood. There is also a sharing menu for two or more, useful if you want several flavours without choosing each dish separately. The restaurant opens in the afternoon, making it a lunch-to-dinner option rather than a breakfast stop. The kitchen closes thirty minutes before the restaurant, so allow time when arriving late.

Nedre Foss gård

Nedre Foss gård is a restaurant in a historic farm building beside Akerselva, close to the river paths and Mathallen. Its seasonal menu draws on continental cooking and includes Norwegian ingredients, with fish, meat and vegetarian mains. You can visit for lunch or book a longer dinner, and there is outdoor seating during the appropriate season. Food service is split between lunch and dinner, with a break in between. It is a useful place to build into a river walk, provided you check the kitchen times before arriving.

Vaaghals

Vaaghals is a Norwegian restaurant in Barcode built around seasonal ingredients and food shared around the table. Its menus distinguish lunch, Saturday brunch, evening dining and larger groups, so the experience depends on when and with whom you visit. The evening signature menu has eight or more servings, designed for the whole table rather than separate individual orders. Saturday brunch is also served for sharing, for two to eight guests, from 11:00 with last orders at 14:00. Evening menu service starts at 17:00 with last orders at 21:00. Ostebutikken

Arguably Oslo's coziest dining spot, offering an intimate, heartwarming atmosphere and unforgettable neighborhood charm. Ostebutikken combines a delicatessen and bistro on Thorvald Meyers gate. Its own site directs table reservations by email and publishes evening hours through the week, with a Saturday lunchtime opening; the kitchen closes before the venue does.

200 Gastrobar

Exceptional sharing plates paired with an incredible atmosphere and vibrant energy. The ultimate spot for a memorable evening with friends. And it’s dog friendly! 200 describes itself as a dog-friendly gastropub on Sofienberggata, with food, wine and cocktail menus that change with the season. Larger groups and private events are handled through a separate enquiry, while regular tables can be booked online.

Rikkes hage

Rikkes hage is an outdoor garden venue in Sannergata, with seating among greenery for drinks and seasonal food service. Its outdoor-only setup makes a visit dependent on both the weather and the season. Check the operator’s announcements for the current food offering and service arrangements when it returns. The venue is currently closed for winter. Its official Instagram bio says “See you spring 2027”, without an exact reopening date. Older summer hours and posts should not be used to plan a visit now. Wait for a dated reopening announcement and check conditions on the day before travelling.

Frognerseteren Restaurant

A dragon-style timber lodge from 1891 at the top of metro line 1, apple cake with a view over the whole fjord, ski tracks outside the door, and the Korketrekkeren toboggan run just below. Frognerseteren traces its restaurant history to 1891 and offers both a restaurant and a café above the city. The venue also schedules music dinners and seasonal meals, so check the current programme and choose the correct dining area when reserving.

Theatercaféen

Vienna-style grand café from 1900 opposite the National Theatre, white tablecloths, a live pianist on the balcony, and a century of Oslo's artists on the walls. Theatercaféen is part of Hotel Continental, which opened with the café in 1900. Its chefs draw on classic French cooking and seasonal ingredients, with separate lunch, dinner, children's and dessert menus. Reserve a table if the visit is tied to a performance time.

Lorry

A gloriously cluttered 1870s restaurant by Slottsparken, oil paintings to the ceiling, waiters in aprons, and a menu that hasn't chased a trend in living memory. Lorry is a long-running family-operated restaurant at the corner of Parkveien and Hegdehaugsveien, with dining rooms full of collected objects and booths. It serves during the day and late into the night; the kitchen menu and reservation route are available on its site.

Smalhans

St. Hanshaugen's all-day neighborhood kitchen, hverdagsmat done properly at communal tables, from morning coffee through a nightly set dinner that changes with the season. Smalhans keeps a direct table-booking route and a page for its changing Dagens husmann menu. Look at the day's offer before visiting if you want the house meal rather than a general evening reservation.

Kampen Bistro

A neighborhood bistro in Kampen's wooden-house village that people cross the city for, blackboard menu, natural wine, and the warmth of somewhere that belongs to its street. Kampen Bistro has been a neighbourhood meeting place since 2001. Its seasonal menu offers a three-course option with a choice of fish, meat or vegetarian main, alongside individual dishes. The menu changes regularly, and private events can be arranged separately.

Restaurant Schrøder

A wood-panelled Oslo institution from 1925 serving brown-sauce classics without irony, and the regular haunt of Jo Nesbø's detective Harry Hole. Schrøder has served traditional Norwegian food since 1926, including meatballs, pickled herring and seasonal dishes. It opens Tuesday–Sunday from 15:00, with a smaller early menu until 17:00 and the full à la carte afterwards; the kitchen closes at 21:30.

Maaemo

Norway's only three-Michelin-star restaurant, Esben Holmboe Bang's hyper-seasonal tasting menu, served like theatre. The country's most ambitious meal, priced accordingly. Maaemo's current seasonal tasting menu is priced at NOK 5,900 per guest, with separate wine and non-alcoholic pairings. Reservations are released at noon on the first of each month for dates two months later. The main dining room takes parties of one to six; larger groups can enquire about private dining.

Oslo Street Food

Oslo Street Food brings several food stalls together inside the former Torggata bathhouse. A group can choose dishes from different kitchens and still eat at the same table, which makes the hall useful when everyone wants something different. There is seating indoors, and the venue also has bars and an evening programme. Its site says DJs take over the old pool area from Wednesday to Saturday, so the mood can shift from dinner to dancing later on. Check the current stalls and menu before visiting, since the vendors change.

Vippa

A street-food hall in a harbor shed at the tip of Vippetangen, a dozen global kitchens, long shared tables, and the fjord starting just past the door. Vippa is a food hall at the tip of Vippetangen with indoor and outdoor seats and stalls serving food from several parts of the world. Groups of five or more can book a table; smaller parties can check the current stalls and choose dishes on arrival.

Mathallen Oslo

Oslo's original food hall in a 1908 iron foundry on the Akerselva, thirty-odd artisan stalls, importers and counters under one roof. Come hungry, leave with groceries. Mathallen combines specialist food shops, cafés and restaurants under one roof, with vendors for meat, fish, cheese, baking, dessert and drinks. The hall publishes Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–20:00 and Sunday 11:00–18:00, while some eateries stay open longer.

Olympen

Olympen, often called Lompa, is a historic restaurant and gathering place on Grønland. The venue's own website currently says the restaurant has closed and is seeking new operators. Its history and distinctive rooms remain part of Oslo's food and nightlife story, but there is no current ordinary dining service to plan a visit around. Check the official site for any reopening announcement before travelling to Grønlandsleiret.

Natural wine with a kitchen that outcooks most restaurants, Tøyen's proof that a wine bar can be both serious and loose at the same time.

Koie Ramen

Koie Ramen is an authentic Japanese ramen concept with multiple locations across town, including Torggata, Bispevika, and Grünerløkka. The core concept centers around traditional Japanese comfort food, pairing freshly made in-house noodles with rich, slow-simmered broths. The menu highlights iconic styles such as Shoyu, Tonkotsu, and Miso, alongside popular side bites like Karaage and Gyoza. Main ramen bowls sit at an accessible price level around NOK 180 to 220, with small sides ranging from NOK 70 to 120. The venue features an informal, lively izakaya vibe with warm wooden interiors and bar counter seating, making it a brilliant spot to warm up on a chilly or rainy evening.

Hos Peder

Hos Peder i Thorvald Meyers gate på Grünerløkka er en hyggelig nabolagsrestaurant drevet av kjøkkensjef Peder Salomon Bild Børstad og medeier Konrad.
