Smalhans

Restaurant Schrøder

A wood-panelled Oslo institution from 1925 serving brown-sauce classics without irony, and the regular haunt of Jo Nesbø's detective Harry Hole. Schrøder has served traditional Norwegian food since 1926, including meatballs, pickled herring and seasonal dishes. It opens Tuesday–Sunday from 15:00, with a smaller early menu until 17:00 and the full à la carte afterwards; the kitchen closes at 21:30.

Java Espressobar

Java Espressobar opened at St. Hanshaugen in 1997 and became part of Oslo's early specialty-coffee scene. The owners describe it as a neighbourhood meeting place where careful coffee preparation matters as much as a welcoming room. Espresso is the natural starting point, though the company also recounts introducing cold coffee drinks, cortado, latte art and pour-over to many Norwegian customers. Visit for a coffee break at the original Java address on Ullevålsveien; check the current counter selection when you arrive.

St. Hanshaugen park

The hilltop park the neighborhood is named after, winding paths, a pond, and one of the best free views of the city from the pavilion at the top. Bring coffee from Ullevålsveien below. St. Hanshaugen is Oslo's oldest municipal park, rising to a viewpoint over the fjord and Holmenkollen. The hill was developed into a park in the nineteenth century and still offers paths, trees and a climb toward the old tower at the top.
